Ana Zagha cave

Ana Zagha cave is the biggest cave (habitation) in the Gobustan preserve. It is situated on the Beyukdash mountain. Ana Zagha is from the words ana - mother and zağa - cave, and is meaning Mother cave. First inhabitants of this cave were settled here at the ends of Upper Paleolithic period. Ana Zagha cave was discovered by archeologists in 1960s. And they began archeological excavations here. In the result of excavations they found many artefacts which help scientists to learn history of Gobustan. They excavated approximately 3 m and under ground were found many petrogliphs. They are considered about ends of Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic period. This petrogliphs mostly drawings of hunters.

In the excavations there were found stone instruments. The labaraory analysis prove that one of this instrument has 22 thousand old. And it prove that 22 thousand years ago already humans lived here. Maybe they setttled here three or five thousand years before. And in the cave archeologists found fire-place. Ashes were taken from fire-place and spent analysis prove that here was Juniper and oak trees, and forests of these trees.
